Termitarium
Across Australia's tropical north, termite mounds, or termitaria, can tower over people. The tallest of these high-rise structures are the work of spinifex, or cathedral, termites.
The National Museum of Australia engaged Artikel Design to assist in developing graphics and illustrative works for an installation within the Great Southern Land exhibition.
The Termitarium is a to-scale stylised wooden termite mound. The reverse highlights the various elements of these remarkable structures through backlit cubbies. Each cubby features photographic and illustrative artwork framed by neon-lit channels, representing the heating and cooling system within the termite mound.
